What is Mindfulness?

In the midst of a busy, often chaotic world where distraction with media and more busyness is often the default, when facing challenging inner and outer experiences, when in a happy moment, mindfulness is a means to turn towards whatever is here, find space, and enter the fullness of being human. If you wish to practice a couple minutes, feel free to do so here.

Mindfulness is an ability, a capacity, that is already present in all of us to meet life, just as it is, in a new way. This is helpful because if we are waiting to have a life without stressors or sorrows before we can be happy, that's a clear recipe to miss the joy of being a fully human being. Awakening to this inner resource, our relationship to ease and challenge, joys and sorrows is transformed. As Jon Kabat-Zinn says in this video, Mindfulness is Life Right Now, in cultivating mindfulness we can, here and now, in a very real and non-theoretical way, better address the amazing complexities of our lives. In this way, life itself is more fully and compassionately known as it is unfolding, allowing  a responsiveness that is wiser, healthier, and more compassionate. We and all in our world may benefit.

Clinical studies and contemporary neuroscience are continuing to explain how cultivating mindfulness and enhancing non-judgmental awareness has a positive impact on our mental and physical health (see the "In the News") but the best and only way to know this is to find out for yourself. We invite you to join us in the journey!

What We Provide

Opportunities to cultivate mindfulness
in the life we are living at home, at work,
at play, and in relationship including ongoing support for class alumni.
Caring, skilled, highly trained facilitator who meets the needs, feelings, and experiences of participants in a safe, respectful environment.
In mindfulness practice we bring kindness and intention to paying attention in real-time. We are all capable of mindfulness. After all, we are always paying attention to something! Rather than something to accomplish, mindfulness is a practice. While educational, the learning is primarily experiential. In practice, awareness of the interplay of mind and body in anxiety, pain, illness, relational and societal stress provides a pathway for wellness in our lives... in our world that dearly needs healing.

What is MBSR?

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is an intentional 8-week journey in mind-body health cultivating the quality of mindfulness. It is a means to wake up this inherent quality that is present and available within all of us; a resource of stability in times of uncertainty that can arise no matter our experience. The course consists of 2 1/2 hr. weekly sessions for eight weeks and one all day retreat at a peaceful setting during week six. Classes are experiential and educational with learning expanded by home practice, group and teacher support. Significant personal commitment of time and effort is required for the course, but know that you will be well supported in your efforts.

MBSR is a practical, straightforward invitation to develop a sustained mindfulness practice; allowing investigating of the "here and now" so that this knowing can enrich our lives in each moment. Mindfulness meditation practices support the capacity to rest in awareness and the wisdom and compassion that arise from it. Through this learning, more creative and responsive possibilities in meeting the inevitable challenges of life are opened.
